Generator FAQ

What kind of oil is needed for my generator?

We recommend standard 10W-30 motor oil. For colder climates below 20°F, use 5W-30 instead. You can also check your owner's manual under "Specifications" for more details.

Is there a specific type of gasoline I should use for my unit?

Use unleaded gasoline with an ethanol content of 10% or less. Avoid Flex Fuel or E85 gasoline, as these contain higher amounts of ethanol.

For my dual fuel generator or inverter, what size propane bottle should I use?

We recommend using a 20–40 lb. propane tank.

Can you tell me about the break-in period?

The first five hours of usage are known as the break-in period. As with all new engines, the piston rings and cylinder need time to seat properly against the newly manufactured cylinder wall.

During this time, stay at or below 50% of the running watt rating and vary the load occasionally to let the stator windings heat and cool. You don't need to run the generator for five hours straight — the break-in period can be completed over any combination of runtime until you reach five total hours.

How long can I run my generator for?

Your generator can run for as long as it has fuel supplied to it, only shutting down briefly to cool down before refueling.

I do not want to use gasoline to run my unit — can I use propane or natural gas?

Unfortunately, no. This machine is designed to run on gasoline only and will not operate on natural gas or propane. We cannot recommend or support modifying the generator to do so, as it will void your emissions warranty. If you're looking for fuel flexibility, consider one of our dual fuel units or our tri-fuel pre-configured generator.

I have an inverter — can I parallel it with another?

You can parallel your inverter with any other Champion inverter that has matching black- and red-squared syncing ports. Use our Parallel Kit Selector Tool to find the best kit for pairing two inverters.

My generator is noisy — can I quiet it somehow?

We do not recommend modifying or adding silencing mufflers to the existing exhaust system. Doing so is done at your own risk and will void your warranty.

Am I able to add a remote- or electric-start feature to my generator?

Unfortunately, remote- or electric-start features cannot be added to any of our products that don't already come equipped with them.

I'm ready to store my unit — what's the best way to do this?

Can I exchange an item?

Yes, we accept exchanges, and they follow the same conditions as returns:

  • The item must have been purchased from our online store
  • The item must not have been used in any way
  • The item must be in its original packaging, with all tags attached
  • The exchange request must be made within 30 days of delivery
